Fort Myers Villas Educational, Literary, & Charitable Institution, Inc.
The Fort Myers Villas Educational, Literary, and Charitable Institution, Inc. also known as the Fort Myers Villas Civic Association, was incorporated in June 1961. Home construction began in 1957 and a small group of concerned residents first organized as a garden club. The group eventually incorporated forming the Civic Association we still have today.
A 2&1/2-acre parcel and the Villas Association building were sold to the corporation in 1961 for $10 as a gift from the developer, Foster Pate. Over the years, with no funding from the federal, state or county government, many unselfish volunteers have contributed to the numerous achievements found throughout our community.
The Villas Community Center is located at 2316 Sunrise Blvd. The park is abundant with exotic trees and plants from around the world. You may also see some wildlife as you are strolling through the park, or you can simply have a picnic under the trees. The Association is responsible for the entrance sign on Woodland Blvd., as well as the beautification and maintenance of the median strips along Woodland.
The primary function of the association is to maintain our unique neighborhood and to organize enjoyable events for the residents. It also plays an important role by promoting community pride and increasing your property's value. Regular activities include: cancer support group, yoga, spaghetti dinners, potlucks, Santa breakfast, Easter egg hunt, Trunk-or-Treat, book sales, various fundraising events, and informational general meetings that are held on the 3rd Thursday of the month.
As a unified voice, the Villas Civic Association was instrumental in getting LEE DOT to reduce the speed limit to 25, put in several stop signs, and install speed bumps on key streets to deter cut-through traffic. We were influential in redirecting the path of 10 mile Linear Park between Daniels and Crystal (2005), so that it would have a positive impact on our subdivision. The Civic Association also played a major role in overturning the County's decision to four-lane Woodland Blvd. (1991), which would have drastically altered our community. We also sponsor the monthly clean up of Crystal Drive.
The Fort Myers Villas Educational, Literary and Charitable Institution, Inc., commonly referred to as the "Civic Association" represents roughly 1100 homes in the Fort Myers Villas. The history of the Villas is being written by all of us. Working together, we can continue to bring about changes that will improve the quality of life in our community.
